just downloaded using adrianyujs rapidshare link - took about 10 minutes average download speed about 70 KBs to check on the issues highlighted here. I had purposely avoided bro shawchyn or mfm servers.

Agree with bro moeyhc, there is no rush to download immediately. Does anyone goes tracking immediately after downloading the latest maps. Maybe checking your inputs, yes but tracking :-k :-?

If we care about the "Few" real contributors who really need to know where to track with the new up date than may I suggest you guys form a 'Small Close Group' (SCG - you guys decide who Qualified) and be given the link to the weekly update. Either one of these guys Shawchyn, adrianyujs, chaick & etc will host a separate link and PM the link to 'The Contributors'. The rest of the World will use the open forum links to download. My experience is the download works fine when it is done on a Tuesday or Wednesday.... why rush?

If there is a need for a 'close door' private link for MFM core teams, I do have another hosting server which I can contribute for MFM use. But this hosting has low traffic volume subscription (50GB), thus it's purely for MFM core teams only and not for public use (if traffic volume blows, it will affect other contents on this hosting that I am using since the hosting provider is very strict, no lev way at all).

I don't agreed on the "back door" service.

This is not back door service but an option for 'Real' Contributors to do their job efficiently. Try it and let's see how many 'Real' Contributors will ask for it... There are just too many people here crying about the slow download and claiming about the need to to see and confirm. I am an active contributor in the past and the 'urge to see my work published' is sometime overwhelming... Wonder if this is the real reason for all these fuss.... I sincerely hope it is not. Either way we should be proud that we are running out of bandwidth as this is prove that we are still relevant and sort after.... :good:

None of the contributors want to see their constribution being updated in the 1st sight. To have "such" a link for download, will coz more problem than it help. It is like 1st: create a seperate 'elite' group; 2nd: hard to justify who can have such links.

To have more servers to serve the download is the way to go.

Understand your concerns about double standards. Getting more servers will only encourage abuse and wastage of resources. Just download later, if you don't need it in a life or death situation, it won't go away.

I think it is easy to select who to be in the group.... get them to request in the open forum.... THAN we will let the Members here judge who're the Worker and who're the Crying Babies. If they start tracking 1-2 hours after the map release most of the time than They Should be IN.... we can know from the track log....isn't it?

My suggestion is not to punish or embarrass but to let Members here realize that we do have limited resources and the need to share these precious resources wisely.... Cheers!

Guys, like us come to an agreement that we agree to disagree. All of us here are very concerned and care a great deal about MFM, if not then why are we here discussing the pro and cons of any and all issues. Important thing, let's just keep to topic at hand, ideas and suggestions given are open for/to debate, just be constructive.

Both bro moeyhc and shawcyn have valid points. Let me throw in my 5-sen worth.

Can we for the initial period just restrict the bandwidth on bro chaicka new server to say the senior mappers, mappers and polygon mapper i.e. members who are actively in creating the maps. After all my reason here is that they need the bandwidth more than us since they need to check on their work.

All associations and societies do have an "elite" group of members. They may not be seen but everyone knows who they are.

Also as MFM get more and more well known for their maps and our active members start growing, adding more and more servers and bandwidth is not the solution. Cost is one factor. We should look for a more practical, viable and low-cost model to cater for the "members" needs - the emphasis here is on members, not those sites in china or elsewhere who are downloading mfm maps for their devices. Members here means everyone, whether they are the elite group, the contributors, mappers, etc.

Let me you an example of a simple solution in action. NASA discovered that their pen do not work in space because there is no gravity. They spent close to (i think) about USD50 million and 5 years to come out with a solution. The Russians on the other hand just bought pencils, cost less than USD 0.05.

Also everyone wants to be the 1st to download the new maps. From experience, if you download say on Tuesday or later, there is no or the congestion is not so bad.

I think what we have now is more than sufficient to cater for the time being.

Have a nice day and keep smiling always... :) :)

Well, I agreed that this is kind of frustration for some serious constributors who want to download the latest maps whenever it is released yet it stuck some where.

Unless we are able to "categeries" all our users status, ie: Senior Constributor, Value Constributor, Constributor, users, then we can provide the Senior to have priority to download, then follow by Value, and Constributor, and lastly only open for "public". It again, involve some argument where "who going to be the judge" to assign such a status? And I can bet, some "users" will shout at us and said, I want the latest maps, coz I am travelling to some where!

So, at the end of the days, it will create another issues.... :frus:

My suggestion is, for those who really want to get a hand on the maps, download it on Tuesday morning (00:00 - 8:00) this is the time that most less traffic yet get touch with the new maps. Don't try on Monday morning (00:00 - 06:00). I might fall in sleep and didn't update the links :tease:

Thanks for all the suggestion, we are working hard to come out the best solutions with lowest cost to provide the highest services experience for all the mfm members.

P/S: it remind me 1 thing, it sound like the motto that I serve for 13yrs in St.John Ambulance "service to mankind"
