Proof of Concept:SVN for Mapping & Submissions (For Mappers)

Limited Access: 5 Users

Reference:

1. TortoiseSVN

Download:

TortoiseSVN Client - x86 (32 bit), v1.6.3

TortoiseSVN Manual, English

Note: This is just a proof of concept to convince the MFM core mappers that SVN is the direction to move forward on map tiles management. The map tiles management includes access control, version control, and audit trail.

Installation Instructions - Tortoise SVN Client:

1. Execute the installation package. (i.e. TortoiseSVN-1.6.3.16613-win32-svn-1.6.3.msi).
2. Click Next in the 'Welcome to TortoiseSVN Setup Wizard' dialogbox.

3. Select 'I accept the terms in the License Agreement' in the 'End-User License Agreement' dialogbox.

4. Click Next.

5. Click Next in the 'Custom Setup' dialogbox.

6. Click Install in the 'Ready to Install' dialogbox.

7. Click Finish in the 'Completing the TortoiseSVN Setup Wizard' dialogbox.

8. Click Yes in the 'Installer Information' dialogbox.

Configurations - Tortoise SVN Client:

1. Click <Start> button in Windows XP.
2. Select All Programs | TortoiseSVN | Settings.

3. Click Network in the left navigation menu.
4. Check Enable Proxy Server (if required).

5. Enter Proxy Settings.
6. Click OK.

Initialization Instructions - Download MFM Map Tiles via Tortoise SVN Client:

1. Launch Windows Explorer.
2. Create a new folder on the hard disk drive. (i.e. MFMmaps)
3. Right-mouse click on the folder. (i.e. MFMmaps)
4. Click SVN Checkout....

5. Enter https://free1.projectlocker.com/chaicka/MFMmap/svn in the URL of repository field, in the 'Checkout' dialogbox.

6. Click OK.
7. Enter <email address> in the Username field and <password> in the Password field, in the 'Authentication' dialogbox.
8. Check Save authentication checkbox, in the 'Authentication' dialogbox.

8. Click OK.
9. TortoiseSVN will proceed to download the map tiles from the server to your hard disk drive.

10. Click OK in the 'Checkout - Finished!' dialogbox.

Standard Operating Procedures - 'Update' & 'Lock' Map Tile(s) for Editing:

1. Launch Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to the folder on the hard disk drive. (i.e. MFMmaps)
3. Right-mouse click on the folder. (i.e. MFMmaps)
4. Click SVN Update.

5. Click OK in the 'Update - Finished!' dialogbox.

6. Right-mouse click on the map tile file. (i.e. 62008888.mp)
7. Click TortoiseSVN.
8. Click Get lock....

9. Enter <MFM username> - <action/purpose to lock map tile> in the message field, in the 'Lock Files' dialogbox.

10. Click OK.
11. Click OK in the 'Lock Finished!' dialogbox.
Image

12. Proceed to edit the map tile.

Etiquettes:
a. Always lock only the map tile that you would be editing in the immediate period.
b. Always provide your MFM username for ease of identification of lock.



Standard Operating Procedures - 'Commit' & 'Unlock' Map Tiles after Editing:

1. Launch Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to the folder on the hard disk drive. (i.e. MFMmaps)
3. Navigate to the folder of the edited map tile file.
4. Right-mouse click on the map tile file. (i.e. 62008888.mp)
5. Click SVN Commit....

6. Enter <MFM username> - <changes/modifications made to map tile> in the message field, in the 'Commit' dialogbox.

7. Click OK.
8. Click OK in the 'Commit Finished!' dialogbox.

Etiquettes:
a. Always remember to unlock the map tile(s) upon committing the changes.
b. Always provide your MFM username for ease of identification of commit.

If not mistaken, it's acronym for Subversion. More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_(software)
