Asus Padfone - Android - Garmin / Garmin StreetPilot

Postby wearwolf » Thu Jun 14, 2012 9:44 am

I was surfing Engadget and read an interesting article/review of their New product ; ASUS PADFONE.

For those of you not familiar with it; here's a summary
= Its an ANDROID "ICS" phone ; 4.3" screen, Qualcomm SnapDragon 2-core 1.5ghz
= Its selling point is the PADFONE STATION accessory; a 10" tablet/screen where the PADFONE docks into; converting a phone into a tablet. The PADFONE STATION has its own battery as well but uses the CPU and WIFI/3G of the phone.
= There's even a keyboard dock accessory too; sort of a TRIPLE Transform; from Phone > Tablet > NetBook form factor.
= here's the link [http://my.asus.com/Mobile/PadFone/#overview]

The reason i'm mentioning it here is because; while reading a product review; i came across this paragraph from Engadget.com. This should get your attention. See if you notice it...
*The full engadget review/article can be found here [http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/12/asus-padfone-review/]

=== 1st Mention ====
"This list may seem to have the basics covered and it's easy to impress your friends with the seamless video playback in the default video player, but trust us, this is far from sufficient when you consider how all other apps slap you in the face with this painful message: "Application does not support dynamic display switching and has been closed." The black list includes pretty much all Google services (e.g., Maps, Gmail, Play services, Movie Studio and YouTube); some of the pre-loaded apps like Garmin and WebStorage..."

=== 2nd Mention ====
You'll also find a healthy set of preloaded apps on the PadFone. With the exception of the Hami utilities from Emome.net (a Taiwanese portal operated by local partner carrier Chunghwa Telecom), most of these should come in handy for those living outside Taiwan. Starting off with the oldies from the Eee Pads, we have App Locker, WebStorage, SplashTop Remote (under MyCloud), asus@vibe, MyNet (for DLNA), File Manager, SuperNote, Polaris Office and Garmin StreetPilot. This has productivity, navigation and entertainment covered, so not a bad package at all.

So recently in the last week since i posted that notice; Singapore now has the Padfone on sale from Starhub. Based on information from the ASUS Singapore Facebook page; and lack of information i can find google-ing the internet; here's my 2-cents

- The current stock firmware is not that stable :ko:
- Garmin StreetPilot; though listed; is not available in the current Singapore stock rom. :thumbsdown:

Anybody from singapore can provide more feedback? I've very curioius about the phone & its capabilities

do you need asus padfone to work for streetpilot?

the answer is NO (start from last month).

it works for my motorola atrix 2 ICS stock rom.

somehow, it is stable with malfreemap NT map but not the normal map.
Nokia 5800XM + garmin XT + Malfreemap + re-radiating antenna: WORK!
