For Europe, Garmin has an excellent map that besides Germany covers Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Northern Italy and Eastern France. Cost : USD99.99

If you are in Sin, you can rent Garmin NT Europe Map from their distributor NaviCom at $1.99 per day. Cheaper than buying for short term use.

See their advertisement on main page of their web site. http://www.navicomtechnology.com/

Open Source also have map but not so detail as Garmin.

It's indeed worthwhile getting GPS in Munich, it's a huge convoluted city esp. for drivers. :)
Pls see my travelogues at http://naim.my - THANKS!

For OpenStreetMap, you can download from this site. http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php

You have the option to download maps for mapsource, nuvis, Mac and even Linux.
Europe (especially Germany) is fairly detailed in Openstreetmap now.
