Not really bro, for Film SLR yes, DLSR cannot last so long, coz for D90, the shutter is designed for 100k cycles only. Of course it can last a bit longer case by case. For D80, it is only 40k cycles, but some ppl still using at 50k.

4k buying a DLSR is not expensive actually, especially D90. It is a very good camera indeed. Dont get D60 or D5000 or D3000 if u plan to have this hobbies for long run. The D90 come with the build-in motor inside the body meanwhile the lower range Nikon DSLR does not have it. This build-in motor will make the camera to use older lens e.g. AF-D 50mm f1.8, which is the cheaper and best build quality lens i would rate it. The D40, D40x, D60, D3000, or D5000 can only use G lens.

Meanwhile, if u want to use older lens, i.e. manual AIS lens, then u can consider D200 or D300, coz it design to recognize the aperture being set at the lens and the camera will smart enough to calculate the appropriate exposure, where D80 or D90 cant do it.
