Can get a Nikon D90 now, the price just recently dropped to RM2.4k for body only...

Here is my recommendation:

Body: Nikon D90 RM2,400
Battery Pack: Nikon MB-D80 RM460
Lens: Nikon AF-D 50mm f/1.8 RM380
Lens: Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8 RM780
Flash: Metz 48 AF-1 for Nikon RM760
Camera Bag: xxxxxxxx RM220
--------------------------------------
Total: RM5,000

Hmmmm....17-55mm f2.4 sounds tempting..... =P~

There is no such lens, both Canon & Nikon 17-55mm is f/2.8, not f/2.4...

Buying a DSLR is a very personal choice.

At the end, nothing anyone says will sway you. You will first of all be influenced by your own perception and what you hear or see before making the plunge. Then you will be influence by the results of others.

Buy what you are comfortable with.

Frankly, many will not stay with one or with what they have. Once on the bandwagon, almost everyone will at some point upgrade or add-on. There are those who upgrade every year. On the average, many will change it within 3 years. It is not like film cameras which in may case lasted 10 years.

You will determine whether your choice is wrong or right.

I dont agree with what many says that the use the equipment and not the equipment itself that will determine the results. I believe that given the same person's capabilities, the extent of the results will be determined by the equipment used.

Oh dont forget, you still need other things such as bag, memory card and flash/batteries.

The optional accessories are such things as replacement strap, tripod, additional battery, cleaning cloth, dry box, handgrip, filters etc.

There are many active forums of photography. I suggest you visit them.

I suggest you to go to a camera shop to really test the body & lens before you decide to buy it. I propose this package based on your initial requirement of "Portrait" purpose. If you can affort, get the Nikon or Sigma 50mm f/1.4 will be even better, price around RM1,300 I guess.

If you are from Penang, I can bring you to a good shop where my friend is work there...

and add a GPS capability for RM 120 ~ 400....

Portrait can be done by zoom like 18 - 200mm or 18 - 105mm as to fix lens like 35mm or 50mm.. you can get a better picture of a person if you take it from a distance like 10 ~ 20 ft and zoom for portrait as compare to 35mm where you need to come close.

Close up shot... without zooming will make your nose look broad,,, and zooming will make it narrower.. this is because of the angle effect.

For Nikon product, go to http://www.nikon.com.my & check for the price, then -15% from that is the price that you can get on the market, if the shop ask for more, go to another shop...

Beware not to get funny accessories for sky-high price, just get what you want...

Canon EOS 550D, EF 50mm, f1.8.
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/can ... p8_ii_c16/
BEST affordable combination for potrait. Lens is RM 300 only for this value prime !!!

If you got more budget, grab the f1.4 USM one.

AND dont forget to get external flash system if you are doing indoor potrait.

p.s. : For N97 lover, #-o #-o Really lazy to explain...
