MFM custom messages for Nuvi

INTRODUCTION
Nuvi 205's messages and menu labels are customizable. If you have enough of Garmin's dull messages, try using MFM's custom messages. Below is an example:
gtt-msg.png

HOW TO INSTALL & USE
  1. Download MFM_English.gtt (Nuvi 2x0/2x5) or MFM_English.gtt (Nuvi 2x0W/2x5W or Nuvi 7xx)
  2. Connect your Nuvi to your PC and wait for your PC to recognize the Nuvi drive
  3. Copy MFM_English.gtt to your Nuvi's Text folder
  4. Disconnect your Nuvi from your PC and turn it on
  5. At the main menu, press "Tools" then "Settings" then "Language"
  6. Set text to "MFM English"
    gtt-guide.png
  7. Your keyboard will be set to "MFM English" too. If you prefer Garmin's QWERTY keyboard layout, change keyboard back to "American English"
  8. Press "back" to return to main menu

MFM CUSTOM KEYBOARD LAYOUT
gtt-keyboard.png

MFM's custom keyboard layout allows easy access to the "/" key. It can be very useful if you are navigating in the Klang Valley where many addresses contain the "/" character. I am not able to make the keyboard layout exactly the same as Garmin's QWERTY layout. Please advise if you know how to do so.

FURTHER CUSTOMIZATION
MFM_English.gtt is a text file. It can be easily edited to suit your personal preference. Please share your own custom messages here :D

LIMITATION
  1. This custom message file don't work on Mobile XT and Que. Not sure whether it will work on outdoor models such as GPSMAP 60CSx.
  2. This custom message file don't work also on Nuvi 300 and Nuvi 600 series.
  3. MFM custom keyboard layout is not suitable for 3.5" Nuvi. Refer to this post

Bro, can you show me the Nuvi 200's original keyboard layout? Maybe you can just add the "/" character to it.

I've uploaded mfm English onto my nuvi and tried it out. Although the slash '/' character is a good replacement to the ALT key, the overall keyboard layout isn't as good as compared to the original QWERTY keyboard. I've also viewed the gtt files of Brit English, Russian and mfm English, just to compare them, but I couldn't see any significant differences... or have I missed it completely? What caught my attention was that on the Russian keyboard, 12 keys can actually be put onto a single row, and probably there's an auto scaling of the keys hence the square vs rectangle keys, see below.

British English:
10.5 keys (max) per row
Key = square [Height, H = Width, W]
<upperkbrd>ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</upperkbrd>
<lowerkbrd>abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz</lowerkbrd>

Russian:
12 keys (max) per row
Key = rectangle [H > W]
<upperkbrd>АБВГДЕЁЖЗИЙКЛМНОПРСТУФХЦЧШЩЪЫЬЭЮЯ</upperkbrd>
<lowerkbrd>абвгдеёжзийклмнопрстуфхцчшщъыьэюя</lowerkbrd>

mfm English:
10 keys (max) per row
Key = rectangle [H < W]
<upperkbrd>1234567890QWERTYUIOPASDFGHJKL*ZXCVBNM/</upperkbrd>
<lowerkbrd>1234567890qwertyuiopasdfghjkl*zxcvbnm/</lowerkbrd>

Any one willing to teach me how to customise the keyboard?? Will try to help out by doing a keyboard layout that works well for the nuvi 200w series..

cos this version only works for the 205w instead of the 200w. Thanks!!

The Nuvi 2x0 models can only display 28 keys so cannot accept the additional 10 numeral keys in the MFM English qwerty keyboard layout. 10 keys in the alphabet are lost unless we can squeeze in more keys as Bro SureHeboh noticed in the Russian keyboard.

Second point is that assuming the MFM English qwerty keyboard works, the 123 toggle button should be replaced (since the numeral keys are already available in the keyboard) by for example a '+&@*%!...' toggle button which will be more useful.
