This procedure applies to
Nuvi 2x0s with HWIDs 0660 & 0834,
Taiwan Nuvi 2x0Ws with HWID 0780 (New)
Nuvi 2x0Ws with HWIDs 0737 & 0835
Nuvi 2x5s with HWID 0851 (New)
Nuvi 2x5Ws with HWID 0827 (New)
Taiwan Nuvi 7x0s with HWID 0836 (New)
Nuvi 7x0s with HWID 0754 (New).
Nuvi 7x5s with HWID 0870 (New).
Patches for the above HWIDs to write the Logs into the SD cards instead of the internal memory are also available NOW
Do not apply these patches on units with HWIDs different from the above as you may permanently damage your GPS.
1. Determine what is your HWID
i. Google in the Internet for g7towin utility
ii. Download and unpack it
iii. Run and select in Configuration - USB connection.
iv. Put GPS in Diagnostic (Service) Mode (touching battery icon for 10 sec) then attach it to your PC
v. Run application command - from menu 'gps' - > get gps id
2. Download the patch written for your HWID from HERE.
Regardless of the current version of firmware that is now in your unit, it will be upgraded or downgraded to the version of the patch. Thereafter, please do not use WebUpdater.exe to update your firmware to another version for you may lose the feature the patches activate.
3. Applying the patch
a) Unzip the patches into a folder in your PC. Updater.exe will be among the 3 files unzipped. It will be a good idea to at this time connect your GPS to your PC by USB cable and copy everything from your GPS memory to your PC to serve as a back-up.
b) Delete the file GUPDATE.GCD from the \Garmin folder in your GPS
c) Disconnect your GPS from your PC
d) The patch must be applied while the GPS is in the Pre-boot Mode or in the Diagnostic Mode. There are 2 ways to enter the Pre-boot Mode:
i. Move the power switch of your unit to ON and hold it for more than 30 seconds in the ON position. You are in the pre-boot mode when you see the LOADER message. Keep holding the switch to ON and connect your USB cable. Wait for 3-5 seconds or longer for your PC to recognise your unit. After the drivers are loaded (your PC will beep), run the updater.exe file and release the power switch only when you see data being transferred from your PC to your unit. Wait for the LOADING or flashing to complete uninterrupted.
ii. If you get a calibration screen inviting you to press the dot when you held the power switch for more than 30 seconds then you have to use this alternative method. Hold the switch to ON for only 5 seconds then connect the USB cable, wait for 3-5 seconds or longer for your PC to recognise your unit. After the drivers are loaded (your PC will beep), run the updater.exe and release the power switch only when you see data being transferred to your unit. Wait for the LOADING or flashing to complete uninterrupted. If the calibration screen comes on before you can run the updater.exe, it means you have held the switch to ON for too long (more than 30 seconds). Switch off the unit and start over.
e) If the above 2 methods do not work for you, switch on normally and then touch the battery icon for 10 seconds for the unit to get into the Diagnostic Mode. (Incidentally, you can charge your battery with your PC using a USB cable if you plug the USB cable in when the unit is in the Diagnostic Mode.) Then connect the USB cable, wait for 3-5 seconds or longer for your PC to recognise your unit. Run the updater.exe. Wait for the LOADING or flashing to complete uninterrupted.

4. Recording tracks
When loading of the patched firmware is complete, you can start your unit normally. At the map screen, touch the Speed window, at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
This will be the resultant screen:
Touching the speedometer will bring you to the screen below:
And when you press the "Next" button.......
The Start Recording Button is only active when you are logged onto the satellites i.e. ready to navigate. The time will be automatically updated when you have satellite lock. There will be a <STOP> button on your map screen for you to touch any time you wish to stop the recording. You will not see a trace your track displayed on the map.
After the recording is completed, you can either go back to the Logging Control Screen and touch on the Start Playback button to view a replay of your track at the speed and actual time you took to record the track or connect your GPS to your PC to convert the recorded track log to gpx files for your MapSource to display.

5. Converting your tracks for MapSource
a) To convert the recorded data into gpx files that MapSource can read, download and unzip the attached wNutrak016.zip file.
b) Using Windows Explorer, look for the Logs folder in the Garmin folder in your GPS unit.
c) Run wNutrak.exe and point to the sub-folder (YYYYmmdd_HHmmss) in your \Garmin\Logs folder as the Input file. Click on the 'Convert' button. Look into your destination folder and find a gpx file (YYYmmdd_HHmmss.gpx) with almost the same name as the sub-folder. The file name is automatically generated but the first block of numbers is the date which will be unchanged.
d) Open this gpx file with your MapSource and you will see your track displayed on the map.
Success!

Sorry, I don't know why. The links seem to have disappeared. We will need Bro Antyong's help on this. This morning the files disappeared then mysteriously reappeared but now the links are gone that is why we cannot download. I am also unable to edit the Guide and make new attachments. I think it has to do with the authorisations set.
For the time being, here are the (Updated 29.3.2009) links to the author's website. Click on the appropriate HWID to download:

Hi Bro johnTan,
Which link doesn't work for you? I have tested all the links and they work. Maybe it is your ISP or browser problem. As the files are between 2.5 to 4MB, they are too large to go through a PM. Please PM me and give me your Yahoo or Gmail address. I can mail the appropriate patch to you.

Re: How to activate hidden 1-sec tracklogging feature on Nuvi2x0
Your patience has paid off, Bro johnTan. I am happy for you.
Neadrenalin has corrected the Taiwan patch albeit the Logs are written into the internal memory instead of the SD card.
The great news is that the patch for HWID 0827 now works for Nuvi 205W (in fact all Nuvi 2x5W units with HWID=0827) and logs are written to either the internal memory or the SD card (lucky people).
In addition, he has written three new patches for the Nuvi 7x0 units. Here are the links to all the patches available:
Nuvi 2x0 HWID = 0660
Nuvi 2x0 HWID = 0834
Nuvi 2x0W HWID = 0780 (Taiwan Units; file size 4089979 bytes.)
Nuvi 2x0W HWID = 0737
Nuvi 2x0W HWID = 0835
Nuvi 2x5W HWID = 0827 (File Size 9369321 bytes; Logs storage internal & SD card)
Nuvi 7x0 HWID = 0754 (FW v4.60; file size 3829958 bytes)
Nuvi 7x0 HWID = 0754 (FW v3.10; file size 3843268 bytes)
(DO NOT use this 3.10 version, if your installed FW is v4.00 and higher or you will lose the Bluetooth function)
Nuvi 7x0 HWID = 0836 (Taiwan units; FW v3.10; file size 5229890 bytes)
Nuvi 7x5 HWID = 0870 (FW v3.30; file size 6666925 bytes)
Access to the Logging Control Menu for the Nuvi 7x0W units: press on speedometer and then press on 'Del' ('Dump') button and you are in the Logging Control Menu.
Please feedback your experiences with the patches.

neadrenalin wrote:2x5w done - (5.00) fast access is not found yet. Interesting thing - screenshot button automatically appears after service menu access and screens are stored on logs folder.
7x0 done (4.60 - untested, 3.10 - tested)
On those units button 'Del' ('Dump') is changed to tracklog menu.
For Nuvi 2x5, you have to wait.
What else is needed to patch: 2x5; xx5, 2x0, 7x0 different taiwan/japan versions;
Probably done with european 7x5 and sent for testing.

a) To convert the recorded data into gpx files that MapSource can read, download and unzip wnutrak015.zip
b) Using Windows Explorer, look for the Logs folder in the Garmin folder in your GPS unit:
c) Run wNutrak.exe and point to your track logs folder (20090216_233445 in the example above) as the input file. After clicking on the 'Convert' button, this is the result: Look into your destination folder and find a gpx file with almost the same name as the track log folder (20090216_233500.gpx in the above example) The name is automatically generated but the first block of numbers is the date.
d) Open this gpx file with your MapSource and you will see your track log:
Success!
