My preference for what it's worth ...
(1) Masjid <placename> - where "Masjid" is really part of the place-of-worship name, hence Friday prayers are performed there, and "placename" the location of the Masjid such as "Kg Baru", "SS6" or similar. AFAIK, all the states "Jabatan/Majlis Agama" would not allow a place to be called Masjid if it doesn't do Friday prayers.
(2) Surau <placename> - for all other Islamic place-of-worship that do not have "Masjid" as part of their name. Such places may or may not do Friday prayers (yes some Surau do Friday prayers, one good example is the Surau at Tabung Haji building near KLCC). Other than "Surau" such places may also be called "Madrasah" (has teaching facilities), "Musalla" (small prayer place) or "Wakaf" (common on Plus highway small layby area).
The most common use of the above POIs for muslims are ...
(1) To find the nearest place for Friday prayers, in a section of a town (KL say) his not familiar with. Can search "Masjid".
(2) To find the nearest place for normal daily prayers. Can in addition search "Surau".
I don't prefer to use "Mosque" because it doesn't differentiate Masjid and Surau. Also all muslims (English, Malays or others) recognize/understand Masjid. Surau is more common used in Malaysia. Musalla (or just plain prayer place) is more common in other countries such as UK and India/Pakistan.

Re: Standardization for place of worships
Hi Bro Antyong,
I applaud the work you have done on MFM v1.15, especially with the houses of worship icons. If I may feedback on the mosque icons, I think it would be better to have a different icon for a "surau" or "madrasah". This is because, in my opinion mosques are large buildings and serve as visible landmarks to the public.
For example, the mosques in SS1 and Section 14 Petaling Jaya are mosques (I live in PJ between these two areas) - they are large and tall buildings and the domed roofs are quite visible from a good distance. "Suraus" are much smaller, some resembling normal houses and hardly noticeable until you drive past them. There are more suraus then there are gazetted mosques in the country.
The "problem" is several "suraus" in a given area tend to clutter the map and I sometimes get confused while glancing at my GPSr, and I go like "since when did a new mosque appear in this part of PJ?". Mosques, like other large buildings of worship make excellent landmarks due to their large structure.
In addition, officially gazetted mosques are usually placed a few kms apart. However, it is usual for a predominantly Muslim community area to have a few "suraus" in the near vicinity of a large mosque.
My suggestion is that the "surau" is represented with a different (or a smaller version of the existing mosque POI icon) so that users can differentiate mosques (as a prominent landmark) from "suraus".
Just my two satellites' worth.

Re: Standardization for place of worships
IMO,
Official Mosque---> MASJID, and maintain existing Icon
Smaller Madrasah/Surau etc----->SURAU, same icon but different colour ?
This is great. Thanks to all Mappers!!

Re: Standardization for place of worships
yeah. Sometimes driving, i see real surau not match with the icon. This because it was small due to masjid icon that shows somthing big..
like bridge, bigger display on a big icon and smaller bridge use small icon to differentiate it.

I agree with sabre and all member give extra idea to change mosque to Masjid.
Now, we all hope...
1) all mosque in our MFM will change to Masjid (Official usually use to do friday prayer)
2) and Surau for second place of worship (that do not have "Masjid" as part of their name) and usually not be use to do Friday prayer. (I hope we have Surau icon also )
I found that, there'r difference facility between Masjid and Surau in Malaysia and that differences will recogniz by POI contributor EZly and if found some place use Madrasah (other than school) or Mussala in thier name (place to do prayer), just change it to Surau for easy searching.
I hope, in our next map, all muslim will EZly search masjid to do friday prayer and can search all masjid and surau to do 5 time prayer.
Antyong...... thanks!

OK. Consensus seems to be for masjid and surau. I believe there will be slight variations such as masjid jamek <place name> also?
If there is a name for the mosque, we will name them "Masjid <name>, <place name>". E.g. "Masjid Al-Mukminun, USJ2"
Guys, find me a small icon for surau.

Re: Standardization for place of worships
Not a bad looking icon, Brother Apisfires. Is there a green version of this surau POI icon (green color is associated with Islam, that's why the Raya ang pow packets are usually green hued)?
It would also be preferable if this icon is slightly smaller than the standard majid icon that Bro Antyong uses.

Re: Standardization for place of worships
The agreed standard had been implemented as of MFM v1.22. Please feedback if you find any conversion error or unconverted POIs.
