Good day everyone,

One of the companies I invested in has a near-complete database of all Singapore Postal Codes as at November 2008, linked with building name (ie. HDB or shopping center name) and approximate GPS co-ordinates.

Would anyone be keen in working on it for MalFreeMaps?

To be precise, the entire list of data is in the following CVS format:

XXXXXX (postal code), Building name/type/block number and road, GPS Lat/Lon (this is partially wrong)

What needs to be done in my view would be for someone to take up certain postal code ranges (ie. 20xxxx to 21xxxx) within my file and then cross reference it with the existing polygons. When a positive cross reference is achieved, the POI will be updated with the postal code.

This has been in discussion before in the other forum, but no conclusion yet.

Before we go further, can you ensure that this company you had invested, allow us to retreive the informations out of their database....secondly, where they got this data and is the place of origin do allow a 3rd party to use its data....these have to be clarify before some big brother give us love letter.

There isn't an issue; I am the both the venture capitalist and GIS specialist on the team.

Next issue, data is acquired from various public domain sources; postal codes are public domain and once sighted and matched against another public domain source of maps by another individual, and subsequently compiled into a new creation and product, resulting in a new works as defined in Cap 63 (Copyright Act) of Singapore.

Finally, if you still have any doubts or queries on what both me or my legal council in my office has on this matter, I can pop a call to my friend in the law firms but I will not be able to cover the cost of the formal legal document.

PS. To whomever asked for the CVS file, I am holding off distributing it because of the continued legal doubt that everyone keeps raising.

Hi Nicholas,

While the postal codes are in public domain, the GPS coordinates are not.

If there is no legal issue, getting these data on to the map is a piece of cake!
