Can someone share the goss with me?

Postby tezza » Sat Sep 20, 2008 10:02 am

So I logged into MSM this morning, courtesy of the PM sent to me by dynamix. Then, I discovered MFM. So here I am.

I'm one of those infrequent MSM posters who only logs in to post new POIs or tracks whenever I have them. But I couldn't help but wonder what happened that would have caused what I believe to be a fall-out between the Gods of MSM and MFM. So, can anyone enlighten me please?

I guess I'll have to post new GPS contributions to both places now?

Ah... thanks for that. Now, it is a little clearer, albeit from only one perspective. Nonetheless, it works in Anthony's favor to be transparent and post it all on his blog for all to read.

I wonder if all this started when they made a poll in MSM to see if the people were in favor of licensing MSM to some organisation? I believe I made one post regarding that issue and my only opinion was that once money starts coming into the fray, it doesn't take long before a community that is based on enthusiasts and hobbyists will be torn apart. In the end, everyone has now lost out due the split.

Money brings out the best and worst in people.

I would have to agree with this.

At the moment, MFM's version of the map is launched without some map tiles controlled by MSM mappers. I would predict that soon later, MSM will also have to launch a new version of the map without the map tiles controlled by MFM mappers?

So some time later, we would have to have both MFM and MSM's versions of the map to have a complete map of the whole Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

So I guess for now, contributing to both MSM and MFM would be the safest choice? :)

I will continue post for both MSM and MFM, until someone over there say they are already "commercial" and chase all the contributor out!

I feel that both the MSM and the upcoming MFM maps both depend on individual contributors for POIs and tracks, and that as contributors, we should help to improve BOTH maps by sending our contributions to both. For us users (and occasional contributors), I think that there is nothing wrong with supporting both. I think as a community, we will ultimately benefit from having more than one map available to the community. And the more accurate both maps are, the better off everybody is! (And helps to keep Garmin from taking action against either of them if there are two [or even more] maps out there!)

So I agree with keong8260, I will contribute to both until I'm chased off by one or the other! :)

Yep. And some of us have been with MSM long enough to remember the earlier times when there were two KL maps. I remember preferring to post updates in Jmleng's KL Street Map because he tends to update faster than Antyong's KL Routable Map.
