MS to retire Windows Live Messenger -- Moves Users to Skype

Postby tympg » Tue Nov 13, 2012 8:01 am

Microsoft will retire its IM service, Windows Live Messenger, and will migrate its users to its recently acquired Skype service. Microsoft intends to turn off Windows Live Messenger in March 2013 worldwide with the exception of mainland China.

In the meantime Microsoft is encouraging its desktop users (Windows & Mac) to download the latest version of Skype (at least version 6) which will allow the user to log in using their MSN/Live account. At the first successful login, Skype will ask the user whether they want to merge their Messenger account with their existing Skype account, or create a new, separate Skype account based on their Microsoft login.
