I received notification from Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (www.gdacs.org) via SMS less than 30 mins after the earthquake  . A fax notification was also sent to my office but it was quite late - 3 hours or so later (could be due to queuing in the fax server of GDACS).

The disaster alert notification is free for all and you can sign up at:-
http://register.gdacs.org/

You will have to define the parameters for which SMS or fax alerts are to be sent to you. Mine - I limit it to 600km radius from Kuala Lumpur; KL will only be affected if there is an earthquake of 9M within 600km radius. Anywhere farther than 600km will have little damage unless it's a 10M - then we are SCREWED :finga: !!
