I am not alone in this problem..... apparently this has to do with the memory utilization of Mapsource in Windows 7....

I contacted Garmin International with my Windows 7/Mapsource problem, they replied me with the reply....

Did a re-download of the 6.15.7 and re-installed it. Used it like normal and then emulated XP and Vista - the same problem persists lah.... Once I zoom the maps up and down a few levels (especially large sized map files), Mapsource will freeze and stop working.....

I have tried to simulate but still unable to reproduce the error or issue that you guys are facing.

Here is my system info:
Intel Q8400 Processor
Gigabyte G45 chipset mainboard
4 x 1GB DDR2 memory
2 x 320GB SATA2 HDD (config as RAID1)
Windows 7 Enterprise x64 (64bit) - fresh install, not upgrade from Vista or XP
MapSource 6.15.7 - direct install, not upgraded from earlier version

So far, I randomly zoom in out almost 30 times, works perfectly.

How I wish I could use Win7 like you!

I think the essence of the problem is that Mapsource gobbled up some 1.965 GB of memory the moment a map is loaded up. I used a 110MB map file to test this out (Thailand). MFM map is relatively small so it behaved quite OK like you said..... Once you load the map up and zoom it a couple of times, start Task Manager and look at Mapsource processing memory consumption!

Well, I need my computer working well with Mapsource starting next week as I will be off to Thailand for 2 weeks and I need to have the computer working well, so it is back to Vista until Garmin comes out with a solution!

You mean your system has low memory? As usual with each OS, the resources required to run smoothly just increases... From what I have experienced so far, Vista onwards doesn't perform well in 32bit even with large physical memory available. So, in Windows 7, I decided to switch over to 64bit and proven its worth.

I have read in other forums where people complained of the same problems also with Windows 7 x64 (most of the complaints are with x64 in fact).... I do not face this problem with Vista x32 or Windows XP...

I have reverted back to Vista x32 for the time being. The only difference with XP is that when I upload gmapsupp.img maps to Mapsource after using Gmaptool is that I have to install it with 'administrator permission' in Vista....

Guess I will just wait for Garmin to solve this and get back into Windows 7 when it is done..... I am on a trip to Thailand now for the next 2 weeks and very crucial that I have access to Mapsource to work my routes ...
