AGPS Q&A

Postby dswwong » Thu Mar 19, 2009 12:13 pm

I understand that using AGPS needs to connect to service provider and costs money for using GPRS data.

Is there a way to use the GPS FREE when negotiating ?

Help for those who need answer to the above.

Bro dswwong, AGPS stands for "Assisted" GPS and it was developed to enhance performance. In short AGPS addresses the problems of getting satellite data through the cell-phone network when a normal GPS will fail through poor or weak satellite signals.

If you want to use AGPS, it is best to subscribe to unlimited plan of service provider else best to get a dedicated GPS that does not depend on cellphone network.

I am using Omnia. Usually I will connect my Omnia to internet through wifi, and update the aGPS. It will last for 7 days. Its free. Else you go to any free wifi spot arond and do the same. Also free.

Btw, the cost of aGPS data download thru GPRS is very minimum lar, less than 5 cents.

u don't have to use AGPS if u don't want to. just wait for few minutes more & u get yr gps signal for free
from Garmin Que for Pocket PC to Garmin Mobile XT for Windows Mobile to Nuvi 205W to Papago M9 for Android & now Garmin Nuvi 2576.

Just go to the aGPS setup page in your phone. Disable the auto update. Once disabled, the phone will not connect thru GPRS to update. But without aGPS, you might need towait for 5 ~ 10 mins before getting a good GPS log.

I noticed that Garmin MXT allows the user to edit the location of where they are and will quicken the satellite position acquisitions. Perhaps this will help, some sort of a manual AGPS.
Current Device: LG G2 Android 4.4.2
Previous Devices: HTC HD2 with WM6.5 and Android 2.3.5
Previous Devices: HTC Touch Diamond 2 PDA Phone (288MB RAM) with WM6.5

Your right bro..
I always use the new location on my GMXT.
Just open the Sats view and click at the New Location button..
So,you can get fast Sats Lock-on..
