TurboCCC Utility : Extra POI Editor / Voice Editor

Postby zamad » Mon Mar 09, 2009 3:23 pm

I'm currently using Extra POI Editor by TurboCCC to edit my POIs, because the nuvi 205W can only edit the name, change symbol, phone number, categories and attach a photo, but NOT addresses. I've tried others like GeePeeEx and NuviEditor and but each have their own limitations.

The Extra POI Editor is written for the 760, but it should work on most (if not all) nuvi's. Unfortunately, on my 205W, not all info are displayed. Nevertheless, at least I can see the addresses of my POIs now. Any feedbacks on this or other poi editors highly appreciated.

MXT Symbian has no problem to display POI full information.

76gpsguy,

Wow... all info displayed on your GMXT Symbian. I suppose it will be the same for the Palm (which I haven't tried).

I convert files using GPSBabel, normally from nmea to gdb, seldom for gpi. If you ask me what I will use to convert to gpi, then I would use GPSBabel to convert the csv to a gpi file.

Hi Bro zamad, gpi is a proprietary format developed by Garmin for their GPS devices and software. This format never documented and revealed to public (AFAIK). Therefore, the proper and correct way to create gpi file is using the Garmin official software, POI Loader.

FYI, GPSBabel gpi module was created via reverse engineering and the gpi file created may not 100% compatible with Garmin gpi format. Try to use POI Loader instead of GPSBabel for the creation of gpi file. :D

bro 76gpsguy,

Thanks for the tip. I had used/experimented with POI Loader before to transfer POIs and only for that purpose, but I found this AIO converter (GPSBabel) useful as it also convert CotoGPS, KMZ, etc data. Hence I use it ever since. Again, thanks for the tip.

TurboCCC has released the latest Extra POI Editor v3.20. Among other things, it now disables maps when the internet is not detected... good if you're staying in hotels which don't provide wi-fi, and you're editing your POI's for later submission. Prior to v3.20, you get a script error when there's no internet.

I'll try out on my personal custom POIs. Seems like a nice tool to use.
Simple and ease of using.
Everyone contribute a bit, eventually we can enjoy and benefit more in our navigation.
