USB cable is the biggest suspect but it can easily be ascertained if you hear an audio acknowledgement from your PC that USB has been detected and software has been installed for it. If so, then USB may not be the problem.
I would reboot (RESTART) the PC.

Bloody Stupid Garmin.... I have long avoided loading maps directly into the main unit memory... now it is back to Square One...
